What a Convention! by Pam Elrod Huffman, President

Renewal is a funny thing.  We can be renewed by something as simple as sitting on the beach and staring at the ocean - which, as I write this, I will be doing in a matter of hours on my strategically planned post-Convention trip to my happy place - Hilton Head Island.  The simplicity of a beach chair, warm sand, and the sound of the surf can revive my spirit like almost nothing else.  Then again, the renewal I experienced during the 2018 TCDA Convention was also like nothing else - and completely opposite in form, energy, and busy-ness from the beach.

The ocean will gently push me into another school year - but that Convention!  Those few days in San Antonio were like a rocket launch for my soul, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who worked so hard to create that once-in-a-lifetime experience: the fabulous TCDA Board; the JW Pepper staff; the energizer-bunny Texas Tech University student workers; the conductors; the accompanists, the section leaders; the workshop clinicians; the committee chairs and committee members; headliners Mary McDonald, David Rayl, and Ruth Dwyer; the incredible artists of mirabai; the fantastic Elementary Honor Choir; and of course - Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, Jonathan Palant, and the heroic Dallas Street Choir.

Of course, all of that incredible talent gathered in one place wouldn't have been successful had it not been for those of you who took time out of your summer and joined us in San Antonio.  I hope you found many "takeaways," both in practical resources and in rich emotional experiences.  I hope you're already planning to attend the 2019 Convention.  And I hope you will encourage colleagues to join us for the first time or rejoin us after an absence.   Facebook pages are great resources for information and virtual catching up.  But a hug, a laugh, a shared tear, singing new music and cherished masterworks with your friends - that's a special kind of renewal.  And that's what you get from a TCDA Convention.  See you next July!

High School Student Leadership Days

This year TCDA offered five (5) of these programs in various locations around the state in an effort to give more students an opportunity to take advantage of this fabulous day of leadership training for only $15 per student.  We worked with SASI, The Leadership People and several other clinicians to offer outstanding sessions for a total of 619 students!
