New Year, New Things, by Katy Flowers, VP Elementary

At the beginning of this new year, I find myself, like many of you, reflecting on changes around me. For me personally, 2018 was a year of big and exciting changes as we celebrated the college graduation and then marriage of my daughter (in two weeks' time!!) In 2019, my youngest son will also graduate from college, and I will be the mom of three launched young adults! And even in the excitement of the wonderful things I have hoped and prayed for, the goals I have worked toward as a parent, there is anxiety in the uncertainty of what comes next. Isn't that often the way, because change - even changes that are good for us personally and professionally - can be difficult.

2019 will be a year of change for us in TCDA. Your state board has been hard at work examining the ways we can move TCDA into the future, growing into the organization we need to be to serve our membership now, while still honoring our history and the path that has brought us to this point. We are excited about the things that will be introduced in the coming months, with that healthy dose of anxiousness mixed in to keep us ever-striving to be at our best.

As we work to better meet the needs of our Elementary Division, we are excited to announce the 2019 TCDA Elementary Immersion Day on Friday, July 26. This will be a full day jam-packed with sessions geared for teachers of those early (and we know oh-so-important!) grades. With a group of presenters led by Darla Meek (Texas A&M University - Commerce), attendees will enjoy a variety of sessions including: The Soprano Recorder in the Kodaly Context; Solfege to Song for the Elementary Choir; and It's Music to Their Ears! Listening Lessons for the Elementary Music Classroom. Round out the day with a visit to our fabulous vendors in the exhibit hall, and a session focusing on technology in the music classroom with Michele Hobizal (Quaver Music), and it's sure to be a day well-spent!

More to come soon! Blessings to each of you as you reach out and embrace whatever changes 2019 may be sending your way!
