Facebook Isn't Face to Face by Carisa Niemeyer, Secretary/Treasurer

I recently helped plan my high school reunion (year not relevant to this article). One of the obstacles we faced in getting people to attend was the idea that people know about other alumni because of Facebook but as a friend pointed out, 'I may know what you had for lunch yesterday, but I don't know how you truly are.'

This brings me to the vital role of the TCDA Convention.  The internet affords us many opportunities but at the end of the day, crowd-sourcing programming ideas doesn't replace singing alongside your friends and colleagues in a vetted new music session, Tried & True session, Sing-In, or worship service, sending a quick message via IM can't replace a hug, warm smile, and chat with a colleague from across the state at the soirée, nor does watching a YouTube video of the Dallas Street Choir or mirabai take the place of experiencing the inspiring power of their live performances. Cultivating our craft with our fellow musicians and colleagues is truly irreplaceable.

So...It's time so get ready for the amazing convention planned for you:

  • Come prepared: Find your TCDA Username and Password. Having it with you will save you time in line. In addition, download the Guidebook App and make a plan!  (We anticipate the schedule in Guidebook will be released on Thursday, July 19.)
  • Vote: Voting is open for your future TCDA Board Members http://www.tcda.net/candidates  and will close at noon on July 27.
  • Dig up your copy of Fauré Requiem**:  Plan to arrive in San Antonio by Thursday afternoon, in time to sing the Fauré Requiem together under the direction of Dr. Kenny Sheppard. Scores will also be available for purchase outside the ballroom.

If you are already registered, get ready! It's sure to be amazing. If you haven't, it's not too late. Registration is open from 10:00am-6:30pm on Thursday, July 26; 7:30am - 6:00pm on Friday, July 27; 7:30am-10:00am on Saturday, July 28.

I look forward to seeing all of you soon! (No Instagram filter needed)

**We will use the G. Schirmer vocal score for the Faure Requiem Sing-In.  This version will be available for purchase at the Sing-In for $6.

High School Student Leadership Days

This year TCDA is hosting five (5) of these programs in various locations around the state in an effort to give more students an opportunity to take advantage of this fabulous day of leadership training for only $15 per student.  As a result, there will NOT be a High School Day at the convention in San Antonio in July.

The dates and locations for the High School Student Leadership Days are:

  • Monday, July 30 - Central Texas Area - Round Rock ISD Performing Arts Center, Austin, TX
  • Tuesday, July 31 - Houston Area - Deer Park HS North Campus, Deer Park, TX
  • Tuesday, July 31 - DFW Area - Lamar HS, Arlington, TX
  • Friday, August 3 - West Texas Area - Texas Tech University School of Music, Lubbock, TX
  • Saturday, August 4 - Rio Grande Valley Area - UTRGV-Edinburg Fine Arts Auditorium, Edinburg, TX
