Feed Your Choral Soul, by Dan Baker, Vice President, Church

Welcome to Summer! The balance between work and play is probably different for all of us, but one of the things I love most about summer is the combination of travel and food. Wherever I am and whatever the occasion - summer vacation, mission trips, All-State camps, cruises, or summer conferences like TCDA - I'm going to EAT well. I can smell the fajitas already! If you haven't perused your pre-convention issue of Texas Sings, do it right now! (https://issuu.com/tcda/docs/txsingsapril2018_web) This TCDA convention offers a smorgasbord of opportunities for your choral soul. Every flavor and variety is represented in a tasty all-inclusive choral buffet. So, what's on the menu?

We whet our appetites early on Thursday with a Faure Requiem Sing-In** with Dr. Kenny Sheppard as well as workshops, reading sessions, and the friendly fun-filled Soiree to wash it all down.

Friday fare includes more reading sessions and workshops in every division topped off with two wonderful events - a concert by professional women's chorus mirabi, Sandra Snow, conductor; and the all-convention worship service at Travis Park UMC, featuring Mary McDonald and the orchestra from University UMC.

Shameless Divisional Plug alert - Apart from the well-known personalities (Mary McDonald, Allen Hightower, Mary McKay) at this year's worship service, we are also featuring...wait for it...YOU - the Congregational Choir. No guest choir in the loft this year to rest your voices; no festival choir to hide the sight-reading of hymns you don't know, just us - TCDA membership lifting our voices together. No formal UIL judging will take place, but we hope you'll stay alert, active, and inspired. A bonus will be a to-go bag of beautiful, but accessible anthems for your church choirs.

Speaking of inspiration, Saturday's final course will include more wonderful reading sessions and workshops as well as a convocation featuring Jonathan Palant's Dallas Street Choir under the direction of the amazing Tesfa Wondemagegnehu. And, if that isn't enough to fill you up, the final concert of the convention will feature the Elementary Honor Choir under the direction of veteran director, Ruth Dwyer.

So, whether you sit down at the table, plop down on the picnic blanket, or gather around the kitchen sink, we will be right there with you enjoying every tasty morsel of the TCDA convention. See you July 26-28, 2018.

**We will use the G. Schirmer vocal score for the Faure Requiem Sing-In.  This version will be available for purchase at the Sing-In for $6.
