Go for the Gold!, by Kari Gilbertson, Past President

I love the Olympics, don't you?  I'm a sucker for recognition of hard work and excellence in the face of adversity!  Often times, teaching my non-varsity men's choir feels like the downhill slalom...with moguls!!   (Or the luge event, where you hold on for dear life!!) Recognition is a good thing, and now is the time for us to recognize our own membership at our TCDA Summer Olympics...Convention.  Be sure to go online to www.tcda.net/awards and view/download the criteria and forms to nominate for the Choral Excellence Award and the Young Director of Distinction Award.

Speaking of gold...you can earn some "gold" by applying for a TCDA Scholarship.  The Texas Choral Directors Association annually awards scholarships to Texas college or university undergraduate music education or church music majors with 60 credit hours and at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 system, and to active TCDA members (three years of continuous active membership required) seeking assistance with higher education (graduate school or certification level workshops).  The deadline for those Undergraduate and Professional Scholarships is March 31st.  What else would you want to do over Spring Break?  http://www.tcda.net/scholarships

The Gold Standard:  Finally, at a Past President's luncheon, I had a conversation with TCDA Past President and Choirmaster Award winner, Dr. Loyd Hawthorne, about the consistent convention attendance by he and his lovely wife, Brenda.  Even after retirement, I am delighted to see them at every TCDA and TMEA convention.  When I asked why, he replied, "TCDA helped to make me the director I am."   He elaborated, "Early on, it wasn't paid for by my districts, and we were raising a family, but we knew that it was an important part of being in this profession, so we made sacrifices and made it happen."  Dr. Hawthorne certainly didn't/doesn't need anyone to teach him how to direct a choir, but his attendance and support make certain this organization will always be one of the Gold Standard professional organizations for those who do.  Veteran teachers and retirees...TCDA is not done with you!  Don't be done with TCDA!  Please consider how your presence and mentorship is important to continue to give and receive from the community of TCDA that has meant so much over the course of your career.

Hotel and Convention Registration is open for all.  Don't miss another great year of TCDA!  Go for the Gold!!!

TCDA is pleased to offer an afternoon with Joshua Habermann, Music Director of the Santa Fe Chorale and Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Chorus.  This will provide 4 hours of CPE credit!

Introducing TCDA's newest addition to the office, Tiffany Downey.

Tiffany Downey is stepping into the footprints of Hallie Boone, who recently left TCDA.  Hallie is expecting her first child and will now be a stay at home mom. While we miss Hallie, we are excited about this transition, and welcome Tiffany into the TCDA family!  Tiffany is a graduate of the Texas Culinary Academy with an associates degree in Culinary Arts.  One of her specialties is preparing Italian dishes.  In 2014 Tiffany received her CMP (Certified Meeting Professional). She brings over eight years' experience in the association management field, with a skill set that includes project management, meeting planning, graphic design, membership development and customer service.  Tiffany is looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible and she is here in the office to assist in any way. Join us in welcoming her to TCDA.

TCDA is pleased to offer a RESOURCES page for our members.  Take a look for classroom tips, curriculum and lesson planning information, templates for programs and all sorts of helpful links.  Click on the image above to see this great new resource.
