Back to School by Jason Dove, High School Vice President

It is hard to believe we survived the first few weeks of a mad dash of forms, reports, technology, in-service, etc. We hope you can look back at your summer and remember a wonderful experience at the TCDA Convention. Many of you had the opportunity for your students to attend a satellite TCDA Student Day. Somewhere in that hectic schedule of a summer, maybe you were able to find some down time for you and your family.

The start of a new year is always exciting as we greet new students and see the faces of returning ones. It is an exciting time to gage your choirs and come up with repertoire to develop tone, musicianship and reading skills. We will face new opportunities and challenges with our students throughout the year. As educators, we must provide all of our students (not just our Varsity ensembles) with our full attention and preparedness. Make the most of your rehearsal and preparation time so you can share your love and knowledge of music with your students to create memorable experiences for each of them throughout the year.   "Often a single experience will open the young soul to music for a whole lifetime" - Zoltan Kodaly

The TCDA Board wishes everyone an exciting year of music learning and music making!

New 2019 Scholarship Program - Save the date:  March 30, 2019

The Houston Saengerbund, founded in 1883, is the oldest musical association still active in the city.  It features three choirs, and is a 501(c)3 foundation devoted to promoting and preserving German language, music, cultural arts and traditions.

To further these ends, the Houston Saengerbund announces a new German Music and Language Scholarship Competition to provide scholarship funding for eligible Houston area high school seniors.   Requirements for the singing competition include an audition recording of a German language Class I Vocal Solo selected from the current UIL PML, uploaded to YouTube by January 12, 2019.  Highest ranked applicants will be invited to compete March 30, 2019.  Details are available at:  http://houstonsaengerbund.org/; application is live on the website as of August 1, 2018.
